Dilution - how do Blue Bengals occur?
Dilution is a genetic color changing wonder!
This mutation causes the color of the coat to become lighter because there is less pigment in the coat.
This is a recessive trait which means that it can be carried without being seen.
If two Bengals that carry dilution breed, they can produce dilute Bengal kittens.
If both parents are dilute, all of the kittens will be dilute.
BLUE is the dilution of black which in Bengals is brown (black).
While Blue Bengals used to be very rare, they are now quite common as more breeders pursue the color.
Blue Bengals can be shown in CFA, but not TICA (at the time of writing, May 2023).
Blue Bengals have purplish/blue paw pads and a blue tail tip.
They will not have ANY black on their body but may have peach colored undertones.
LILAC (aka lavender or platinum) is dilute of chocolate.
One would expect these cats to appear as a more pale version of blue.
There have been some reports of lilac Bengals at the time of writing, but we have yet to see them.
FAWN is dilute of cinnamon.
Cinnamon is a mutation of chocolate.
One would expect a fawn Bengal to be a very pale orange with a pink nose and paw pads.
There may be fawn Bengals in the world at the time of writing, but we have not seen any to date.
